Moving a library

  • Great way to keep track of what a library looks like in order to re-assemble after a move, such as for a re-carpeting or hosting a major sporting event
    • For re-assembly purposes
    • For insurance purposes
  • Provide access to all the people involved
    • Members of the Host Society for the sporting event
    • Landlords, local government
    • Senior management of the institution
    • Employees in the library
  • Easy way to keep track of where the photos are available
    • For example, on the Sunday night before we opened only one staff member was available for the moving staff and the movers didn't understand how to re-assemble the magazine display area.  Pulling up the photos off flickr, the librarian was able to explain the assembly process

Seeing a far-away library

  • For prospective students to...

    • Help make their decision about which institution to attend
    • See what their future educational institution looks like, particularly if they have to make their decision to attend without being able to visit the campus
  • For prospective employees to...

    •  See if it's the kind of physical working environment that they would like
    • Prepare for interview questions
  • For librarians elsewhere to...

    • Consider new ways to organize their library
    • Compare ways of delivering services, such as library instruction
    • Compare ways of considering traffic flow without having to move their own library
  • For the public to...

    • See parts of a campus they wouldn't normally see
    • See what the campus will be like before attending a conference, for example
    • Learn more about their local community
    • Learn more about the cultural aspects of the community in which the library resides since many cultural artifacts, art, and pictures end up in display in libraries

Documenting the History

  • Libraries and their layout evolve

    • Particularly as a result in the explosive increase in computer usage and provision
    • What did the library look like before computers were introduced?
    • How has the decrease in the size of computers allowed for a change in spacing requirements?
    • Show building planners where electrical and Internet connections need to be provided
  • Humanize the library staff

    • Show pictures from fun celebrations, such as Halloween
    • Show pictures of current and, especially, new staff
    • Great to link from blog

Beautify your Blog or Web Page

  • Use images to add visual appeal: http://weblogs.elearning.ubc.ca/psychresources/
  • Use advanced search in flickr for photos, screenshots or other pictures that you can reuse under Creative Commons licensing
  • Rather than upload a copy of the photo to your blog or web page, you can simply copy HTML from flickr that will then display the photo on your site
  • Remember to give credit where credit is due:  easiest way is link back to the photographer (example)
  • If you have a digital camera, why not use your own photos?
